Speckled Lettuce
Lactuca sativa 'Speckled'
Duration: Annual
When to Sow: Spring Ease of Germination: Easy
Very nice loose leaf variety with red-speckled leaves believed to have been brought to Canada in the early 1800s by Mennonites from the Pennsylvania Dutch area of the U.S. Then a century later, in the 1980s, the variety was brought back to the U.S. when a descendent of Urias Martin, a Waterloo-area Mennonite, donated seeds to an American seed exchange. The variety has since developed an avid following among home gardeners. It is tender, juicy and sweet, slow to bolt, and easily survives light frosts in early autumn. Sow every 2-3 weeks for an extended harvest. 40-55 days.
