Do you have any information about herbs that will help with allergies? Also, any information about herbs that have healing qualities would be greatly appreciated.

Herbs that are effective in allergies are: Garlic, anti-infective and antihistamine; Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), anti-inflammatory and a mild nerve sedative; Nettles (Urtica dioica) helps to purify the blood and strengthens resistance ; Elderflowers (Sambucus nigra) anti-inflammatory and anticatarrhal; Linden flowers(Tilia cordata or europa); Plantain (Plantago lanceolata or major) anti-allergy and antihistamine. The dried herbs can be mixed, and a tea made by steeping a teaspoon of the mixed herbs (except garlic!) in a cup of boiling water for 10 - 15 minutes. A cup of the tea should be taken 3 times a day for an adult. For children, reduce dosage according to weight: for example ¼ - ½ the dosage for children 5 - 12 years old. Fresh garlic can be added to salads and vegetables.

If food allergies are involved, you should try to identify the food by trial elimination from your diet. The most common foods causing allergies are dairy products, eggs and shell fish.

For more information on the healing properties of herbs, see our web page information on medicinal herbs, start with a good book such as "The Herbal Medicine Cabinet: Preparing Natural Remedies at Home" (Available at Richters), or try your local library or health food store for books about medicinal herbs. For the Web page information, access www.richters.com, choose "Q & A", then choose "Medicinal Herbs and their Uses".
