I had a hysterectomy 8 years ago and I am not a good candidate for estrogen therapy. Is there something in a herb that I could take? I would like to take something, being that I can’t take anything man made, maybe I can take something natural. I’m looking for something to give me back the passion that I lack now in intimacy, that I had before, and I was thinking that maybe it was from the lack of estrogen.

Healing for Women" (available at Richters) states that "surgical menopause is easily supported by good eating habits, a healthy lifestyle, and a good herbal program."

Some of Gladstar’s suggestions for nutritional therapies include:

*Calcium - found in seaweeds, yogurt and other dairy products, almonds, sesame seeds, dark green leafy vegetables

*Iron - found in spinach, beets, beet greens, seaweeds, apricots, whole grains, raisins, tofu

*Vitamin E - except for women with diabetes, a rheumatic heart or high blood pressure, the recommended supplemental dosage is 400-600 I.U. daily of natural sources vitamin E, with d-alpha and mixed tocopherol

*Bee Pollen - for its high protein concentration

*Spirulina - for its high quality protein, B vitamins to support the nerves to help with mood swings and depression, and gamma-linolenic acid to help prevent osteoporosis and arthritis

*Dong Quai - to regulate hormones, improve blood circulation and provide minerals

*Ginseng - to build energy to overcome fatigue and stress

Foods to avoid are alcohol, sugar, caffeine, white flour, refined, processed foods and salt.

Exercise is important for physical and emotional health. It can prevent osteoporosis, improve functioning of hormones and strengthen the heart.

Herbal therapy is suggested by Gladstar to strengthen the adrenal glands, which produce estrogen after the ovaries have stopped. One of the tonics suggested for this purpose includes Wild Yam, Sarsaparilla, Blue Cohosh, False Unicorn root, Dong Quai, Sage, Licorice and Dandelion root. Herbal tonics are to be used regularly over an extended period of time to produce long lasting results.
