If you are trying to prevent glaucoma, what are some herbs or teas that will help?

If you have any eye changes at all, it is extremely important that you consult any eye doctor immediately.

In glaucoma, the iris is compressed against the cornea, obstructing fluid circulation. Factors predisposing to glaucoma include previous eye inflammations or injury, high blood pressure, diet deficiencies and taking steroids. Preventatives include nutrition for the blood vessels of the eyes: the bioflavonoid rutin, high flavonoid fruit like blueberries, blackberries and raspberries; freshly ground flax seed and cold-pressed flax oil; general nutrition: whole foods, sufficient protein, avoid coffee; avoid tobacco which constricts the blood vessels supplying the optic nerve; learn to handle stress by practising relaxation exercises: stress (excess adrenaline) raises eye pressure; avoid alcohol.

Legumes, like kidney beans, pinto beans, mung beans andazuki beans contain a chemical that is helpful in keeping the eye fluid circulating. Similarly, yellow skinned onions, broccoli, garlic and green tea are helpful.

Helpful herbs include: chamomile and turmeric help to keep the eye fluid circulating; ginkgo improves blood circulation to the eyes.

If you have a family history of diabetes or high blood pressure, have your doctor check regularly for signs of glaucoma. Peripheral vision tests can detect glaucoma.
