I am a 30 year old lady and suffer from this long list. Please tell me what to do. I tried Ayurveda, allopathy and even some bit of homeopathy. I have suffered from arthritis and varicose veins for 3 years and both are hereditary conditions from my great grand mother and finally on to me. I was checked positive for PCOS 8 years ago. This caused a mild acne, which appears more like a rash, and I have never had clear skin since then.

I got married in January 2006 and have put on 5 kgs since. I feel very tired and sluggish. Please advise me what needs to be done. My diet is not balanced and I don’t even take my vitamin pills regularly as I’ve become so very lazy. Please advise.

The first thing to do is to get blood tests done that include thyroid hormone counts, looking for the cause of your fatigue and weight gain.

Secondly, I advise you to visit a clinical or medical herbalist or a naturopath, who can take your full health history and make recommendations based on your whole health picture and your blood test results. To find a natural practitioner, please see our website www.richters.com:

In the meantime, to improve your energy, work on your diet the best you can by avoiding all processed and refined food, replacing them with whole grain products, lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and nuts and seeds. Avoid fatty meat and dairy products and fried food. Caffeine, sugar and alcohol can cause fatigue. Replace margarine, shortening and salad oils with extra-virgin olive oil. If you have a juicer, a daily juice made with beets and carrots is strengthening. A supplement of barley or wheat grass is often helpful in improving energy.

Support for the liver with Dandelion root can help to clear out toxins that may cause fatigue.

Cinnamon and ginger are warming herbs that can improve digestion, circulation and energy.

To make a tea, simmer one teaspoon each of dandelion root, ginger root and cinnamon bark in four cups of water for 15 minutes. Let the mixture steep for 15 minutes. Strain and drink one cup, three times a day. The unused portion can be kept in the refrigerator for one day.

Try to get physical exercise every day, even if it is just a short walk at first. Exercise helps to increase energy.
