Is kudzu an herb? And what is it used for? What can it help with?

Alan Tillotson, iin "The One Earth Herbal Sourcebook" lists the root of kudzu (Pueraria lobata) as a general tonic that calms the nerves and heart and relaxes tensions and spasms in the upper body. Tillotson says that the flower reduces alcohol cravings.

In his clinic, Tillotson uses kudzu root in formulas, according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine tradition, when he sees upper body tension, stiffness, muscle spasm and pain. He says it may be mildly beneficial for treating heart conditions when taken as a tea on a daily basis. The tea is made cutting a fresh or dried root, about 1/2 inch in diameter, into small pieces and simmering in water for about 30 minutes.

Tillotson lists research that shows kudzu root as liver protective, as increasing breast milk production, increased blood circulation and mild blood-sugar lowering effects. It should not be taken in pregnancy.
