What herb would be good for my bad nerves in my genital area due to restless leg syndrome. Some herbs have actually worked to calm my legs and my arms.

I’m one of those extreme cases who was diagnosed with Refractory RLS (resistant to drugs), and it’s in my legs, arms, feet, and genital area; and I have it 24/7. The genital area is the most severe and drives me crazy. I was just wondering of there was an herb for that particular area (vaginal area)? I have tried the herb, Valerian Root to calm my legs and arms, and to sleep at night (sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t). I have also tried Valerian Root with Hops Flowers - that doesn’t seem to work. I occasionally take a mixture I got from an organic herb shop - (Peppermint, Chamomile, Passion Flower, Strawberry Leaf, Lemon Balm, Valerian, Scullcap). That seemed to help a little bit to calm me during the day, but not the evening. Maybe

I’m just not giving these herbs enough time - how long does it take for herbs to take effect?

Relief will take time. Herbs must be taken consistently, three or four times daily for several weeks for best effect. The herbs you mention are good choices for temporary relief. You may find that some of the suggestions below can provide long term healing.

Please see our item on restless leg syndrome on our website www.richters.com. Choose Q&A from the main menu, then enter "restless" for the Q&A search.

If you have tried all of the recommendations in this item, consider the following:

1. Consider food sensitivities: are there any foods that you eat that cause indigestion, bloating or allergic reactions?

2. Consult with an MD who also practices natural medicine. Some cases, in people who have other signs of magnesium deficiency (fatigue, fluid retention, anxiety, mood swings, headaches, insomnia) have been cured with intravenous magnesium.

3. Folic acid supplement: best prescribed by an MD who practices natural medicine and can determine which combination of vitamins and minerals would best benefit you

4. Consult with a homeopathic doctor who has experience with RLS

5. Consult with a chiropractor who has successfully relieved RLS

Externally, on the genital area, you can try Bach Flower Rescue Remedy cream, homeopathic St. John’s wort cream or homeopathic German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) cream.
