I recently discovered I have high blood pressure. I need an herb to replace salt. The [typical commercial salt] substitutes are bitter.

Salt is used in cooking as a flavour enhancer. Herbs and spices can be used in the same way. For more information on herbs as salt substitutes, please go to

Additionally, a splash of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice can be added to foods to also help bring out the flavour in foods. Furthermore, these foods contain potassium which is important for increasing sodium excretion which decreases extracellular sodium that can be the cause of salt related high blood pressure. Potatoes, bananas and oranges are also high in potassium.

However, high blood pressure can be caused by many different things including stress, reduced kidney function, cardiovascular diseases and more. If reducing salt in your diet does not help to bring your blood pressure down, consult a holistic healthcare provider for more help.
