What herb is good to take for schizophrenia, and the drugs used for schizophrenia?

I can only speak of herbs here as I am not trained in pharmaceutical drugs. The treatment for schizophrenia is going to depend on the cause. The causes are quite varied including family history, poor gut function, drug reaction, gluten sensitivity, trauma and being a spiritual crisis. Therefore the root cause needs to be addressed. Psychological and spiritual help might be needed and/or possibly dietary changes might be needed. It is interesting that as early at the 1920’s there has been a relationship between schizophrenia and gut health. Diet wise it is important to make sure the diet is free of allergens such as wheat and dairy and must be high in nutrients that feed the nervous system such as essential fatty acids, and B vitamins. Low carbohydrate diet also often benefits when blood sugar fluctuations are present. Herbs that have been used to treat the various symptoms of schizophrenia such as agitation, apathy, melancholia, fatigue and anxiety. Herbs that relax such as passionflower, skullcap, wild lettuce, valerian and black cohosh may be useful. Herbs that help to increase energy levels and melancholia include rosemary, ginseng, and St.John’s wort.
