I sowed comfrey seed I bought this spring and it has been three weeks and so far only one seed germinated. I ordered another two pkts of seed and will sow them as well. I soaked the seed for 24h and sowed them in a standard peat/humus/perlite potting mix. The seed was sowed and covered 1/8th of an inch. I kept them moist and my apt temp is about 20 degrees C. I covered them with another seed plug tray. Do you have any suggestions? Perhaps they need higher humidity and I cover them with a plastic dome? More heat with a heating pad?
You are doing well, Jonah, and with a bit more time, you should see more germination of the comfrey seeds. Sometimes, germination takes as long as 30 days. One technique to improve results is stratification. This involves sowing the seed in soil or soil-less mix, such as you already have. After watering the seed tray, it is then popped in to a plastic bag and placed in the refridgerator for about a month. After this period, remove the seed tray from the refridgerator, remove the plastic bag, water well, and place in a warm, sunny area. Stratification improves germination with some seeds by overcoming dormancy and prompting the embryo to begin growth upon return to the warmth. You can try this method now, or continue for a few weeks more, to see if more seeds will germinate. I would recommend that you not cover the seed tray with another seed tray, as there should be some exposure to light. Good luck with your comfrey seeds.
