Is taking all these herbs at the same time contradicting each other? I went to my health food store and ask for something for my problems, she recommended the following: digestive enzymes, 2 W-less 1000,1 flax seed oil capsule, 3 times a day with each meal also 1 chromium with breakfast and 1 with supper. I also take 3 acidophilus before going to bed. and every 2nd or 3rd night I drink ultra slim green tea before going to bed.

My problem is that no matter what I eat I get severe heartburn. I have done for years, and like most people used to take over the counter meds Tums, Rolaids, Zantec etc. which I now know kill all the acid in your system. I’m 51 years of age and am trying to lose 20lbs. I do walk a lot but am still having a hard time losing the weight. Please advise on what I am doing and taking.

Long term heartburn can result in permanent damage to your esophagus. Please see our website at www.richters.com for information about dealing with heartburn. Choose "Q&A" from the main menu, then enter "heartburn" f or one search and "reflux for a second search. The best thing that you can take at night is slippery elm bark powder – in powder form, not capsules. Avoid all foods and supplements that appear to cause heartburn.

The best way to take flax is to use the whole seed. Either grind it in a coffee grinder before adding to your food (sprinkle on fruit, salad or cereal) or soak the whole seed in water for four hours. The dose is two tablespoons of the seed daily. In thi s form, flax helps to promote healthy bowel elimination and helps to protect the whole digestive tract. Other forms of flax do not provide these benefits and may contain rancid oils, adding toxins to your digestive system.

For weight loss, I suggest the diet described in the item "Resistance to Weight Loss, with Upper Body Fat: Syndrome X http://www.richters.com/show.cgi?page=./QandA/Medicinal/20011002-1.html. Search for "syndrome X" on our "Q&A" search page.

A good digestive enzyme supplement, taken with meals, is usually helpful in promoting healthy digestive system functioning.

I suggest that you avoid all other supplements, unless recommended by a qualified practitioner who has done a complete medical assessment of your health.
